The Mornington Peninsula always has an interesting array of things to do on any long weekend but with the Queens birthday weekend almost upon us, it’s time to get thinking about what to do.
Here are some top picks for event happening on the Mornington Peninsula.
The Mornington Winter Jazz Festival will be having you tapping your feet all over town with jazz set to be heard all over Mornington from street corners, bars, restaurants and parks from the 6th – 9th of June. Some of the events are free and others are ticketed but all include outstanding artists such as Katie Noonan and her 3 piece band, Vince Jones and 9 piece band Saskwatch to name a few. Winter Wine Fest at Red Hill is always a popular event and I’m sure this year will be just the same. Sample some of the 200 wines on offer from 50 wineries along with food from some of the Peninsula’s best chefs. The main day of the festival is on Saturday 7th between 11am – 4pm at the Red Hill Recreation Reserve. Tickets are $55 pre booked or $60 on the day and designated drivers are $45. For car enthusiasts, there will be a Hot Rod and Custom car display held at the Mornington Park from noon – 4pm on Saturday 7th. The park is located at the end of Main st next to the beach. Make sure you take a jacket or something warm as the wind straight off the water can be quite cold.
Take a ride on the Mornington Railway. The steam train will be operating on Sunday 8th with the first train leaving at 11am from the Moorooduc station heading a few kilometres to the Mornington station before shunting for the return journey at 11:30am. Trains depart Moorooduc at 11am, 12:15, 1:45 and 3pm. Tickets cost $43 family return, $16 adults, $13 concession and $8 children. To find out more click here.
Mornington Main St market is a weekly Wednesday craft market selling everything from kids clothes, fruit and veg, art and craft, home made cakes and more. Though on Saturday 7th there will be a special market to coincide with the Jazz festival. For more info click here.
Mornington Racecourse market is on Sunday 8th between 9am – 2pm and has over 300 stalls with all items for sale being home baked, hand made or home grown. Parking cost $3 and no dogs are allowed.
Rye Foreshore market is on Saturday 8:30 – 12 noon located near the Rye Pier. This market has anywhere between 75 -120 stalls and sells a variety of items. Next to the market is the fantastic Rye’s Up! community playground for anyone taking children along.
If you want to do something free and without crowds then why not try your luck trout fishing at Devilbend. Take a bushwalk through Baldry’s crossing, or at Cape Schanck.
